The Cross Portfolio Data Integration Oversight Board (Oversight Board) has been established under the Commonwealth arrangements to oversee the development of a cross government environment for data integration involving Commonwealth data for statistical and research purposes that is safe and effective. As part of its role, the Oversight Board reviews and decides on applications from proponents to become accredited Integrating Authorities with the capacity to deal with high risk data integration projects involving Commonwealth data.
The Oversight Board has responsibility to help manage the systemic risk associated with conducting multiple data integration projects involving Commonwealth data in an advisory capacity. Once a project has been registered, the Oversight Board has a 10 day period to review projects and raise any concerns or suggest improvements if a project presents an unacceptably high systemic risk or inadequate risk mitigation strategies.
For further information, please see the Terms of Reference for the Oversight Board.
Membership of the Oversight Board
The Oversight Board is chaired by the Australian Statistician (Australian Bureau of Statistics) and membership currently comprises the heads of the Department of Health; the Department of Social Services; and the Department of Human Services.
As noted in the Terms of Reference for the Oversight Board, any Board member who has a real or apparent conflict of interest in a particular decision must exempt himself or herself from the decision made by the Board.

The Secretariat to the Cross Portfolio Data Integration Oversight Board
A small Secretariat, the Secretariat to the Cross Portfolio Data Integration Oversight Board, has been established to support the Oversight Board and its ongoing activities. The Secretariat has a number of roles in relation to the interim accreditation scheme:
• providing advice to applicants on the interim accreditation process
• reviewing draft applications to provide some initial advice for applicants before applicants submit their final applications
• submitting the final applications for accreditation against the interim arrangements to the Cross Portfolio Data Integration Oversight Board; and
• publishing information about accredited Integrating Authorities, including summarised versions (which exclude any commercial-in-confidence material) of their applications for accreditation.
For more information on the broader role of the Secretariat please see Data Integration Involving Commonwealth Data for Statistical and Research Purposes: Governance and Institutional Arrangements.
